
At Albany he produced 47 All-Americans and eight times finished in the top ten teams in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. He founded the Adirondack Three-Style Wrestling Association (ATWA) Wrestling club which produced 28 National Champions from the schoolboy, high school, college, and open division tournaments.Īt Stanford and Albany universities, Coach DeMeo's teams won 289 dual meets. He was named National Coach of the Year three times and named USA Wrestling's Developmental Coach of the Year for 2005. Greco-Roman Junior World Team, and 4-time assistant coach for U.S. Greco-Roman Pan Am Team, 2-time head coach of the U.S. Senior Greco-Roman World Team, 2-time head coach and 2-time assistant coach of the U.S. He was assistant wrestling coach at Michigan State 1967-1969, head coach at Stanford University 1969-1977, head coach at Albany University 1978-1995, 4-time head coach and 16-time assistant coach of the U.S. He also won a National freestyle championship.įollowing college Joe DeMeo began a long, illustrious coaching career. At Cornell he was a three-time letterman and had two undefeated dual meet seasons and was undefeated against all Ivy League opponents during his career. Pleasant High School where he was an outstanding wrestler and went on to attend Cornell University where he had a career as a varsity wrestler from 1960-65. He has two children, Michael, 37 and Jay-Seph, 28. He presently resides in nearby Niskayuna. He is survived by his grandchildren, Giovanna, Isabella, Gabriella, Emily, Sam, Remsen, Summer, Jack, Abigail, Michael, Kaela, Hannah, Luke, Jacob, Zachary, Dylan, Axel and Jane.Joseph DeMeo was born in Schenectady, NY in 1941. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Raymond and his wife, Flor, Catherine and her husband, Chris Walton, Joseph and his wife, Patty, Maria and her husband, John Dunn, Susan and her husband, Dan Leary, Dan and his wife, Suzanne and Anna and her husband, Siegmar Escholz. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan Harmsworth Demeo his sisters, Virginia and Theresa and his brothers, Eddie and Michael. Ray was predeceased by his brother Louis and his sister Anne, S.J. In his later years, Ray loved to be with his grandchildren, to hit golf balls and to be with his wife Susan, who cared for him every day. He was known and loved by many people in the Newton area, where, in retirement, he worked in residential real estate. Ray was also a scratch golfer and ran the West Newton Golf League from his restaurant, which he owned and operated.

Over the next ten years they had seven children. He married his love Susan Harmsworth in Brookline in 1962. After the war, he finished college at UMass Amherst with a BA in Economics.


He landed at Normandy D+5 and saw the liberation of Paris. He came of age during and was shaped by the Great Depression. He played all sports and excelled at baseball, hockey and golf. In his youth, Ray was a good student and athlete at St. Ray’s life centered on his family and his faith. He loved conversation, debate and good humor.

He was magnetic, always engaging and genuinely cared about people. Ray Demeo was a man of exceptional optimism and confidence. Raymond Joseph Demeo of Newton and Mashpee, died on July 11, 2016.īeloved husband and father of seven children and 18 grandchildren, Ray was born Decemin Waltham, he was the second of seven children to Louis and Anna Demeo.
